Our mission

Traffic is the visible result of collective human behavior and it's probably one of the most talked about and discussed subjects in daily life apart from the weather and politics. Designing and managing traffic networks and facilities is a difficult and challenging discipline, because in many cases traffic operations are difficult to predict and traffic measures and policies often have many counter intuitive side effects and conflicting consequences.

Trafficfactory.nl is an initiative by Prof Serge Hoogendoorn and A/Prof Hans van Lint, both affiliated with the Transport and Planning department, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at the Delft University of Technology. Together, Hoogendoorn and Van Lint have 15 years of experience and teaching and research in traffic flow theory and management, we supervised over 20 PhDs, 30 Msc students and authored and co authored several hundred articles in internationally peer reviewed journals and conferences. Our mission is to bridge the gap between what is scientifically known about traffic operations and what is actually used in practice. We do this by offering consultancy, second opinions and a range of practical services such as data analysis, or quick scans. The basis of those services is a thorough scientific background. We believe that todays traffic problems cannot be solved or managed by just engineering judgement or rules of thumb. In many cases, a solid background in the latest scientific insights is necessary to come up with sustainable and robust solutions.
